The Cairns Botanic Gardens are only 4.2 km (2.6 miles) from the very centre of Cairns and are also only 3 km (2 miles) from the international airport. The formal Gardens' entrance is on Collins Avenue but the Botanic Gardens includes the Botanical Reserve which stretches from Collins Avenue across to Greenslopes Street.
Both Freshwater and Saltwater Lakes are contained within the Botanic Reserve. Further up Collins Avenue are the Tanks Arts Centre and the Mt. Whitfield Conservation Reserve. Cairns is in tropical Queensland and experiences a monsoonal climate with a rainy summer season (normally from November to March) and a more comfortable dry season from April to August.
